
Sao Luis was founded by the French and named after their King Louis XIII, between 1641 and 1644 the Dutch were in control, but it is the Portuguese influence that a visitor feels throughout the city. The city boasts quite a few huge mansions that reflect the style of the 17th and 18th Centuries. But history is not everything in São Luis. The island was blessed by nature and is surrounded by wonderful beaches. Adventurous visitors can take São Luis as a starting point to discover the mysterious Amazon jungle. On the commercial side today São Luis serves as the main sea port for the states of Maranhão and Piauí.
