Sao Luis was founded by the French and named after their King Louis XIII, between 1641 and 1644 the Dutch were in control, but it is the Portuguese influence that a visitor feels throughout the city. The city boasts quite a few huge mansions that reflect the style of the 17th and 18th Centuries. But history is not everything in São Luis.
